Tileston School Yard - South Fourth and Ann streets.

Students in costume are in school yard, before the front wings of the school were added. St. Mary's Catholic Pro-Cathedral is in the background. The original school building in the middle of the block was constructed in 1871-1872 with funds from Mary Tileston Hemingway, a wealthy philanthropist from Boston, who named the school after her father. Opened in 1872, as Tileston Normal School, the Italianate building was designed by John A. Fox, Boston, architect. It later (1897) was the Wilmington High School and served in that capacity until the early 1920s when New Hanover High School was built. Other additions were made in 1910 (center part of Ann Street annex) and in1919 (wing and stair halls to the south of the original building). This photograph was taken before the 1937 and 1950 additions were constructed.
