South Front Street - 400 block.
The west side of the 400 block of South Front Street (Block 99) contains from left the
Thomas H. Smith House (No. 420), the Meares-Bridgers-Kerchner House(No. 416), the
Forshee-Sprunt House (No. 410) and the Governor Dudley Mansion (No. 400). The Thomas H.
Smith House, often referred to as the "Steamboat" house, was built in 1881. A
prosperous grocer, Smith was a native of England. A later addition in 1892, gives the
house a memorable steamboat gothic character. The Meares-Bridges-Kerchner House (c. 1821)
was moved from its original site at the southeast corner of Front and Chestnut in 1887 to
make way for the U.S. Post Office. A third story was added at the time of the move. (See #539 for information about the Governor Dudley Mansion).
