Oakdale Cemetery - Gravesite and
marker for Hon. George Davis.
The Honorable George Davis of Wilmington, was a distinguished lawyer and Attorney-General
of the Confederate States of America. Inscription on slab: "George Davis, born March
15th 1820; died February 23, 1896. "Statesman, yet friend to truth and soul sincere-
In action faithful and in honor, clear." (Sec F, Lot # 9) Inscription on marker at
the head of the grave: "In Memoriam - A tribute to the Honorable George Davis from
the Memorial Association and the Cape Fear Chapter #3, United Daughters of the
Confederacy." George Davis was a prominent Wilmington attorney, who served as
Attorney-General of the Confederate States of America. A statue to his memory is located
to the east of the intersection of Third and Market streets in Wilmington. (Also see #10 for more about Oakdale Cemetery).
