Fifth Avenue - 300 block; Ann
Street, 400 block.
In 1908-1911, St. Mary's Roman Catholic Pro-Cathedral was built by Rafael Guastavino
(father) and Rafael Guastavino (son) in the Spanish Baroque style of architecture. Natives
of Spain, the two Guastavinos made extensive use of brick and tile. Local citizens recall
that the building contains no nails. The builders also worked on the Biltmore Estate in
Asheville and the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City. The church was
dedicated on 28 April 1912. Across Fourth Street is the east side of Tileston School.
