Collection Title:
Buildings With Historic Plaques: Wilmington & New Hanover County

Collection Number: 999

Processed By: Beverly Tetterton

Completion Date: May 2003

Physical Description: 387 folders (as of 9/1/2003)

Restrictions: None

Abstract: This collection includes photographs and public and private documents which record the architectural history, local history and family history of Wilmington and New Hanover County, North Carolina. The collection was gathered from 1966 to present day, but the historical topics date from the 18th century to present day. Topics include the history of commercial, institutional and residential architecture, as well as the owners, architects and builders.

Provenance: The Historic Wilmington Foundation awards historic plaques to buildings that are 75 years or older and at least 50 years old at the beaches. A plaque file is created for each individual building. For public view, copies of all plaque files are housed in the North Carolina Room of the New Hanover County Public Library. In addition to the original documentation, the library continuously adds pertinent materials to the plaque files, i.e., newspaper clippings, advertisements and new documentation.

Historical Note: From the beginning of the Historic Wilmington Foundation (1966) there has been a committee to study and document historic buildings. The founding members of the organization felt that education and preservation go hand and hand. Before an historic plaque is granted, the applicant must research and document the history of the building. A plaque committee oversees the research and documentation and prepares a plaque text.

As information required for an historic plaque changed over time so did the plaque application and research reports. Some of the plaques awarded in the early years of the Foundation may have only a few items of documentation. However, some of the early research reports are very thorough. From the early 1980s to present day most of the files have research reports and copies of documentation which prove the construction date; architect and builder; nativity, birth and death date, and occupation of the first owners and subsequent owners if they owned the building for 40% of its existence.

Research reports contain an historic chronology that gives and overview of the building and owners. Some research reports are followed with a listing of block books, deeds, maps, census records, city directory research, newspaper articles, vital statistics, wills, cemetery records, and other sources, i.e., family and local history. Within this listing relevant sources are given. For example, the deed book and page number are given or the section and lot number in the cemetery is given.

Supporting the information in the research report is the documentation which may include photocopies of birth and death records, marriage records, deeds, maps, obituaries, city directory pages, cemetery records, business records and histories, architects ledgers, insurance policies, census records, bible records, church records and histories, tax lists, building permits, oral histories and interviews, diaries and memoirs, military records, school records and histories, architectural drawings and historic photographs. Many of the files contain newspaper articles that come from the Bill Reaves Collection. Copies of newspaper clippings from the Bill Reaves Collection (which is housed at the New Hanover Public Library) may include an article about the construction of the building; events (marriage, funerals, parties, etc.) which took place in the house; and articles about the lives of the occupants. Many obituaries can also be found in this collection. Modern newspaper articles are clipped and filed into the plaque files by library staff. Brochures, invitations, posters and other ephemera can also be found in the plaque files. Some of the files contain copies of the Historic Preservation Certification Application form that was presented to the National Park Service under the Tax Reform Act of 1976. Designation of the building resulted in a tax reduction for the owners. Other files may contain a Wilmington Application for Exterior Alterations that was presented to the Historic Properties Commission by the owner.

A photograph of each building must accompany all plaque applications. The majority of files have photographs taken at the time the plaque was awarded. In 2003 photographs were taken of each building that did not have one. Some files may have historic photographs of the building or the owners and occupants.

Scope and Content: Historic Buildings: Wilmington & New Hanover County includes the research and documentation for those buildings that have Historic Wilmington Foundation plaques. Other historic buildings are not included in the collection. Each folder has research and documentation concerning an individual building. In telling the story of the building, the story of the owners is also told. Documentation associated with family history, architectural history, school history, business history, church history and other aspects of local history can also be found in this collection.

While most of the buildings are within the Wilmington city limits, others are located at the area beach towns and the unincorporated area of New Hanover County.

Organization: This collection is organized into 383 + file folders, one folder for each individual building that has an historic plaque. The collection continues to grow adding an average of 20 files per year.

Arrangement: The collection is arranged in alphabetical order of the historic name of the building.
